God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection. For who is God except the Lord? Who but our God is a solid rock?

Psalm 18: 30-31 NLT

God is my shield. He is our shield. He is the very one keeping us out of harm's way.

These two simple verses tell us so much about the character of God.

God is a protector… our protector. He is the very one keeping us out of harm’s way.

God is our shield. Because he is our father he wants to keep us safe, so nothing we will face in life will ever be enough to break God. This is why he is the perfect shield.

A shield is an external object with the sole purpose of being a barrier from something that is meant to kill. Only God can protect us from everything the devil tries to use to kill us spiritually and physically.

But a shield can’t protect, if the person needing protection doesn’t use it. We need to always arm ourselves with the protection of God because we never know the exact moment a battle will erupt. We can never be caught off guard, because our lives, and the lives of those around us, depend on us being prepared at all times.

We remain prepared for battle by devoting ourselves to intentional prayer, studying the word of God, and allowing God to change our hearts. When we do this God’s shield will always be around us.

But sometimes our faith can be shaken and we might not have the strength to hold up our own shield. Just as a warrior may put his life on the line to shield a bystander from enemy fire, Jesus did that for us. He allowed for God’s shield of protection to be lifted off of him and placed onto every gentile and jew. For a brief moment in his life, Jesus was vulnerable the the attack of Satan. For a brief moment, Jesus experienced the effects of sin. And in this brief moment, Jesus was killed.

But isn’t it wonderful that Jesus didn’t stay dead? He rose and defeated the grave. He showed us that he truly is the greatest shield of all.

Jesus can protect us from our past. Jesus can protect us from the damaging effects of people’s words. Jesus can even protect us from ourselves.

Your Challenge:

Think about the different ways God has shielded you from the attacks of the enemy. Spend some time showing God your gratitude.
